Kanye West has been talking about him for a few weeks. Blame it on the anti-Semitic remarks that the latter recently made! And after Twitter and Instagram, it’s now Apple Music’s turn to sanction the American rapper.
Kanye West, in the eye of the storm
If you haven’t been following news related to Kanye West, a little reminder is in order! Because for the American rapper, October was a rather chaotic month, the fault of his declarations. As a reminder, the one who is now called Ye broke Twitter and Instagram rules, posting several anti-Semitic postswhich earned him an account suspension almost immediately on both social networks – with the arrival of Elon Musk at the head of Twitter, Ye has regained his account.
Recently, Kim Kardashian’s ex-husband was also let go by Adidas and Balenciaga, brands that had worked with him for many years. With this list – which is growing day by day – of companies that are distancing themselves from the artist, could we ask ourselves what will happen to his music? Spotify CEO Daniel Ek told Reuters that despite not endorsing Ye’s comments, he would not remove his work from his platform.
It’s about his music and his music is not against our rules. The decision is up to his record company, who can decide whether to act or not – Daniel Ek
But it seems that not everyone agrees, since Apple Music just removed the “Kanye West Essentials” playlistwhich brings together the most famous pieces of the American rapper.
Apple Music is on the attack!
The deletion of this “Essentials of Kanye West” playlist therefore represents the first blow given to the work of the American rapper. Even though this act does not completely remove access to Kanye West’s music on Apple’s music platform, it still removes it from an important feature. Indeed, so-called “Essentials” playlists allow users to find the best hits of a single artist condensed into a selection.
This feature allows, among other things, to quickly have an overview of the work of a rapper/singer/group, without having to search precisely for his discography. With this deletion, Kanye West therefore becomes a little less visible on the platform and risks losing streamswhich could therefore have an impact on its revenue generated through Apple Music.
For now, we don’t know if the Apple-stamped music platform will go even further by removing the American artist’s entire discography. This decision taken by Apple Music, is not without reminding us of the one taken by Spotify vs. R. Kelly in 2018. As a reminder, the company had also removed from its playlists the songs of the singer of RnB, when the latter had been accused of sexual abuse.
