There are several people who, due to errors in the IBAN or other issues at this time, have not yet been entitled to the 125 Euros that the State is giving to the vast majority of taxpayers. The problem is that there are already those who are taking advantage of this to make a profit at the expense of taxpayers. Worst of all is that the scheme is even well done leading less attentive people to fall for it. We received one of these emails and we are going to explain to you how everything works so you don’t fall victim to this threat. It’s more or less similar to another one that’s walking around, but this one seems to be even more elaborate. See what’s going on with this IBAN change and why it takes money.
125 Euros: this IBAN change will take money from you
It all starts when we receive an email telling us that there is a problem with our IBAN and as such we will not be able to receive the 125 Euros of State support. Of course, many may think they would never fall for this. However, if we put ourselves in the place of a person who unfortunately has not yet had the right to this support and who eventually went through problems with the IBAN, we are halfway to being deceived.
Now the message also tells us that to proceed with the correction we have to click on the link below.
When we do that we’ll come to a site that looks like the finance login. However, there is a big difference and I don’t even mention the address up there, which in some cases can be hidden or even make some sense. It’s just that whatever data you put in will work.
In fact, this is an excellent way to check if it would be something trustworthy or not. Try putting the NIF 123456789 and the password also 123456789. If it works then you are most likely on a fake site.
After authentication, we are immediately taken to the page that allows us to change the IBAN. On the real finance website this would never be like this as we have to go through a few steps to get there.
Finally and when we click submit then we are taken to a new window that says Credit Information. In it we have to put our credit card details. Or at least hope those who created this scheme.
Now finance would never ask for our credit card details. So don’t put your data, for nothing, on this and other similar sites.
This is why we really need to guarantee our safety and a golden rule is to always be suspicious. Finance does not communicate with users in this way. Either by letter or we can see the notices when we go to the site and log in with our credentials. Whatever these emails are, we really have to ignore them.
However, there are more important rules to be protected.
1. Keep your operating system up to date
We all know how annoying it is to have Microsoft Windows constantly notify us of system updates or to restart our computer. Especially when we have to install something while we are working. It is for this reason, in fact, that many people decide to stop Windows updates for as long as possible.
The truth is that we should always have time to schedule updates. Most of the updates released include security updates and using an older version can leave our computer vulnerable to malware attacks.
2. Set automatic backups
Keeping our software up to date is a big step towards protecting data. However, this does not guarantee that your computer is 100% protected from a virus attack, file corruption or hard drive failure.
Among the files that we don’t want or can lose are personal documents, photos or videos.
To keep all relevant data safe, you should set up a full backup on your Windows computer. In this way, you will be able to restore everything in case something goes wrong and you lose the data stored on your computer.
3. Pay attention to what you download
Getting software from a reliable source is crucial. So make sure you are always on the official pages of the applications and don’t go there through strange links. If something seems strange to you, it’s a sign that it’s better to be quiet and you shouldn’t download anything.
4. Use a regular account for everyday life
Most of the time, we don’t need administrative rights when using the computer. Of course, we may be tempted to take full control of the system at any time. However, constant use of the account in administrative mode can lead to significant damage. This is in case the security of the system is compromised. With a regular account what criminals can do is soon much more limited.
5. Clean up unnecessary files
It’s an unavoidable thing. As time goes by, the disk becomes fuller and Windows 11, which was once fast and without garbage, starts to look like the streets of Lisbon when there is a garbage collection strike. However, in five minutes we managed to make Windows 11 cleaner.
First we have to do research and then we start writing storage or cleaning recommendations. On the right side, just click on Open as shown in the image below.
Now a window will appear that shows the status of our disk. I draw special attention to the temporary files section.
Now look for the cleaning recommendations section. We can see, for example, in the image below that we can recover up to 5GB of storage.
More specifically and when we click on that option we see more specifically what is taking up space. That way we can clean up the previous Windows installation, the downloads and what’s in the recycling bin.
Of course, we can still see other information such as large or unused files and unused applications.
6. Restart more times
It may seem unnecessary to be restarting or shutting down the computer. In fact, it’s time to leave everything always on. However restarting the computer can fix many problems. Also, there are many updates that require just that. So if we start to restart we will really notice the difference.
