At an event that took place in Amsterdam, the Connectivity Standards Alliance made one of the most awaited announcements ever by anyone who has or wants to build a smart home. I’m talking about Matter, a new protocol designed to simplify a Smart Home.
The Matter protocol has been in the tech news for a few years now as a very interesting promise. As of today, it is no longer a promise and becomes a new development platform for smart home products.
Matter arrives to simplify the configuration and operation of a Smart Home
If you’re in the know about smart homes, you know that before you start buying smart products, you have to choose an ecosystem. Be it from Google, Amazon, Samsung or Apple, this is a dependency to take into account when buying devices.
With the introduction of Matter, this concern will be just a memory. The main objective of this protocol is to develop a universal ecosystem in which any device developed for one of the ecosystems mentioned above can operate with the others.
Imagine you have a smart speaker from Google, but you want that smart doorbell from Amazon that, until now, needed Alexa to work. With the introduction of Matter, the latter can also be controlled through Google Assistant.
As you can see in the video above, the goal is that you can buy a smart light bulb as if it were a conventional light bulb. If you like that lamp, buy it without having to worry about whether it will work with your ecosystem or what application is needed for its configuration.
Matter is a protocol that will be implemented in many of the smart products to be launched in the future, but also with those you already have at home. This will be possible through a simple firmware update for your smart products.
190 products have already been certified for Matter and more to come
When Matter was officially announced, it was mentioned that there are already 190 products certified for this protocol. However, this number will not stop here, with the promise that many more will follow.
Thanks to the introduction of Matter, there is also a return of several brands that had waned their participation in this type of technology. The promise of simplicity and uniformity proves to be tempting not only for consumers, but also for brands.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that Matter’s announcement does not mean that its advantages are automatically available in any smart home. It will now be up to companies – such as Google or Amazon – to make their products and ecosystems compatible with this promising protocol.
