November 4th, 2022 at 5:40 p.m. by Sara Petzold – Netflix with advertising costs less than the normal version of the streaming service, but it doesn’t work on every hardware. Certain users are left out and see an error message if they want to use the basic subscription with advertising.
If you want to use Netflix in the future with a basic subscription at the low price of 4.99 euros, you have to reckon with a serious limitation. By that we don’t mean the advertising that is shown in this version of the streaming service, but the lack of support for individual hardware constellations.
The Netflix basic subscription with advertising has been available in Germany since November 3, 2022. With this subscription, users can stream the content in HD quality up to 720p, but have to put up with around four minutes of advertising breaks per hour. Also, Netflix restricts the selection of available titles due to “license terms” – unavailable titles are marked with a lock.
Apple TV and Google Chrome Cast are not supported
The third major limitation that users with a basic subscription have to accept concerns the hardware on which the Netflix version with advertising runs. If you use certain devices, you have to do without the basic subscription altogether. According to the Netflix FAQ, the basic plan with ads is not available on the following devices:
Android devices not running at least Android version 7 or higheriOS devices not running at least iOS 15 or higherNetflix app for WindowsChromecast and Chromecast Ultra (Basic subscription with advertising only works on Chromecast with Google TV)Apple TVPlaystation 3
Netflix does not provide any information as to why the devices mentioned do not support the playback of content from the basic subscription with advertising. Affected users only have the option of streaming the desired content on another device or switching to a subscription without advertising.
