While the most recent anime taken from the Dai no Daibouken manga has just ended, the tie-in in salsa action currently being developed at the forges of Game Studio and KAI GRAPHICS does not yet have an approximate launch window. On the occasion of the Tokyo Game Show 2022, however, Square Enix confirmed that Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai will be released simultaneously worldwide on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC, suggesting that the release of the new spin Dragon Quest -off may be closer than you might think. To pass the wait, we have passed the new materials under our careful magnifying glass and we offer you our preliminary impressions below.
The hero’s road is still long
Being that of Dai no Daibouken a rather long manga, for some time we wondered about the portion of the story that would be adapted in Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
Where previously we hoped that this could cover the whole story, which in our opinion would have justified the decision to publish it only after the conclusion of the remake of the animated transposition (we talked about it in our previous preview of Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai), during the TGS it unfortunately emerged that this will not be the case. From the information disclosed directly by Square Enix we learned that the story mode of the tie-in will adapt just under 50% of the original plot, interrupting immediately after the conclusion of the battle of the Castle of Rock Sovereign, or the narrative arc in which the young Knight del Drago will finally come into possession of the prodigious “Sword of Dai”. While we would have preferred a complete adaptation (also because the second part may never even see the light), there is still the possibility that the developers take advantage of this questionable split to devise secondary content aimed at further exploring the always fascinating universe of Dai. no Daibouken.
In this regard, if the Story Mode will allow us to take control of Dai, Popp, Maam and Hyunckel, and participate in exciting battles against the immense demonic army in the service of the Great Satan Vearn, a secondary mode will instead lead us to a place. unpublished. Entitled simply “Temple of Miracles”, this will in fact open the doors of an original and multi-level dungeon, which will change with each visit: not only the enemies will always be different, but the choices made along the way by the player will impact on the abilities of his heroes. and in some cases they will enhance them.
The choices, in any case, will also determine the opponents who will stand in front of us, it is no coincidence that Square Enix has hinted that some wrong decisions (and perhaps taken in a hurry) will end up putting a formidable opponent on our path, of which at the moment we ignore the identity. Judging from the materials in our possession, however, it would seem that the bosses that can be encountered in the Temple of Miracles are still Hadlar and the other enemies provided by the Story Mode. That being the case, it would no longer surprise us so much if the secondary mode included one or more rivals from the second part of the manga, giving fans the opportunity to fight, for example, with Hadlar’s own royal guard or the fearsome Killvearn.
Individual roles and personalization
Moving on to the combat system, it emerged that during the battles of Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai we will have the control of only one character, which if necessary we can, however, replace with one of the three companions otherwise entrusted to artificial intelligence.
Having constantly at our disposal all four of Avan’s disciples, in the midst of the fighting we can therefore make use of the different talents of the aforementioned and develop strategies aimed at exploiting, from time to time, the weaknesses of the opponents. Equipped with extraordinary physical strength and great agility, Dai and Hyunckel will clearly be the most suitable characters for hand-to-hand combat and they will always have the task of keeping the most dangerous enemies at bay, offering Popp and Maam the possibility instead. to use their respective spells from a safe distance. If the spells of the first will allow to inflict considerable damage on the enemies cornered by the two tanks of the gang, simplifying their elimination, the bullets of Maam’s magic gun will have both an offensive and support function, as the girl will tend to use the own weapon also to restore the health of the companions. Judging from the gameplay clips, it would seem that the guys from Game Studio and KAI GRAPHICS have managed to reproduce the synergistic bond that has always distinguished the very young disciples of Avan, allowing them to overwhelm incredibly tough and powerful opponents.
Although the publisher insists on sipping information on the tie-in, on the occasion of the Tokyo Game Show we discovered that the protagonists will be able to add to the equipment not only weapons, techniques and spells (to be used through the appropriate shortcuts), but also specials objects which have been given the name of “Bond Memories”. Comparable to cards, the latter will increase the statistics of the individual, increase for example the health points, physical strength, stamina and so on. By carefully choosing the memories to equip, it will therefore be possible to customize a little the parameters of our heroes and prepare them for the challenges they will have to face along the path that will lead them to defeat the demonic army.
Finally, as regards the technical sector, Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai still seems quite backward, but it is impossible to deny the progress made by the production in the last two years. Although angular and not too detailed, the polygonal models have improved a lot, especially when compared observed in the very first screenshots released in 2020.
The indefinite postponement of Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai announced by Square Enix at the beginning of the current year is therefore bearing fruit, and considering that at the moment we do not yet know when the title will reach the stores, vi it is the real possibility that developers will actually be able to raise the quality of the final product. Given the cross-gen nature of the project, our only concern is that it may arrive too late in our hands, resulting in out of time.
