The Expendables, or “The Mercenaries” as it came to us, is a series of films that does not need any particular introduction. Take all the stars of the 80s and 90s action films, put them together on the same set, give them a pack of weapons and you will have the right mix between a classic film and a “parody” (term that I use improperly here) of the entire film genre to which it belongs. Jeffrey Greenstein, producer of Millennium Films, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter revealed that he had long evaluated an all-female spin-off.
According to Greenstein, however, the greatest difficulty was to build a convincing story that started from the premises of The Mercenaries and that involved an all-female cast. There is no shortage of experiments in other franchises, says Greenstein. Although several solutions have been evaluated, the producer is convinced it may be more interesting before inserting strong female figures within the main vein. In the fourth film, expected next year in September, Megan Fox is expected to participate, for example. In the previous films, however, the “screen queen” of the mercenaries it was Rhonda Rousey (UFC champion and already appeared in Fast and Furious 7).
Speaking of Fast and Furious, Universal seems to have plans similar to those of Millenium in mind. If the Fast Saga has already had its spin-offs dedicated to Hobbs and Shaw (respectively Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham), nA feminine variation on the theme is not excluded and centered on figures that have already appeared in the history of the Toretto family like Michelle Rodriguez (Letty) or, for Fast X, Brie Larson. To talk about the idea is Donna Langley, a figure at the top of Universal, in an interview granted to Business Insider.
Speaking of the next major films: The Expendables 4 is expected in September 2023. Fast X, which also boasts Jason Momoa in the role of antagonist, is expected instead in the spring.
