As we know, God of War Ragnarok has various graphics modes on PS4 and PS5, thus allowing players to optimize their experience based on the game by choosing whether to prioritize graphics or framerate. But what is the best option to play to the fullest?
Obviously the right answer is “it depends”, it depends on your preferences and obviously on the type of panel you have. Regarding the PS5 version, in the God of War Ragnarok review our Alessandro Bruni helps us to clarify.
The true flavor of next gen is perceived on the fluidity front, especially if you have a panel with VRR support. In this case, by activating the High Frame Rate setting, the performance mode (1440p upscaled) will allow you to play with a frame rate that tends to exceed the 80 fps threshold, which becomes 40 (pretty solid) by opting for the 4K preset (native without HFR and dynamic otherwise) while the standard performance mode (which dynamically moves between 1440p and 2160p) still offers 60 fps granitic, against the 30 of the aforementioned fidelity preset.

And what about the old-gen version? Again, the technical analysis of God of War Ragnarok on PS4 allows us to find out more about the performance of the game. On PS4 Standard and PS4 Slim there are no options to select and the game runs at 1080p and 30 fps, on PlayStation 4 PRO there are different modes available, one of which with Unlocked frame rate over 30 fps compared to a resolution between 1080p and 1656p.
The mode that gives preference to image quality proposes a target 30 fps and a resolution that fluctuates between 1440p and 1656p. “We have not encountered any noticeable fluctuations in terms of fluidity during our journey, reflecting the excellent work done by the folks at Sony Santa Monica in optimizing the gaming experience on the base PlayStation 4.”
