While all eyes are on God of War, another video game star has just made his return: Sonic. Yes, the famous blue hedgehog is trying out the open world for the first time, and the press releases have just arrived. So, successful attempt for SEGA? Here is the answer !
Important: Our Sonic Frontiers test will arrive tomorrow, Tuesday November 8, 2022, on JV.
The least we can say is that Sonic Frontiers did not experience obvious marketing. Throughout the presentations, the players pointed out a pick-up technique; an open world with a probably wobbly structure; even levels that look a little too much like what’s been done in the past. So yes, fears and rants have not been lacking, but that’s it – the verdict on the latest adventures of the famous blue hedgehog has fallen! The result is more engaging than expected! On Metacritic, a famous ratings aggregator, Sonic Frontiers is at 73/100 (a little less than 15/20). It only remains to understand why. Follow the leader.
Step forward noticed
There is one thing you have to understand: Sonic Frontiers is an important step forward for the SEGA series, as was Sonic Adventure twenty years ago! Yes, this is the first time that the ultra-fast hero has ventured into the open world, while his last years can be summed up in reviving a brilliant past that is now over (Sonic Colors Ultimate, Sonic Mania, Sonic Generations). The question now is whether this bet is a winner… Obviously, yes! For Play Sense (80/100) Frontiers is “one of the best modern Sonic games”, quite simply. Same story from the side of VGC, which speaks of a “brilliantly refreshing adventure – which gives the series a well-deserved revamp”. For its part, the well-known Game Informer notes an “admirable effort” which clearly makes you want to see what SEGA has in store for us next.
“Frontiers is a deliciously weird and experimental evolution of Sonic” – IGN (70/100)
Structure that is debating
More concretely, Sonic Frontiers does not offer an open world in one piece but five large areas, in which it is possible to move freely, to access the “classic” levels of the license! Along the way, you will be able to come across enemies to fight, bosses, secrets and even mini-games. In the end, the last adventures of the blue hedgehog are a bit on the fence, such as the Gaming Trends analysis (85/100). “Frontiers puts one foot in the future with its open structure, while keeping the other stuck in the past with mechanics and level ideas that are ten years old.” On the one hand, there are media who are for: God is a Geek (75/100) judges that the open world and the varied gameplay make Sonic Frontiers the “most exciting” episode in decades! On the other hand, others are not convinced! JeuxActu (12/20) evokes a world “oh how empty”, mechanics “far too redundant”.
A backward technique
For the rest, it’s rather mixed. For example, for bosses, GamersRD (85/100) speaks of a “very satisfying” feeling – while MeuPlayStation (75/100) mentions phases that are “neither entertaining nor stimulating”! On the other hand, if there is one point on which everyone agrees, it is the disappointing technique. IGN notes, for example, a “horrible pop-in” – parts of the scenery that appear at the last moment. Yes, this Sonic Frontiers is obviously far from perfect, but its fate turns out to be more positive than expected. A good thing, right? As a reminder, the game is released this November 8 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and even Nintendo Switch.
