Avatar 2: The Way of the Water will be released in a few weeks, but James Cameron is already taking precautions: if the film does not do well enough, it could compromise the continuation of the saga.
Avatar 2: The Waterway will be broadcast in our cinemas from December 14. As a reminder, it must be the first episode of the revival for the sagasince we were told five films in all ! Most James Cameron doesn’t seem to be so confident anymore …
James Cameron wonders if you ‘give a fuck anymore’
At Total Film magazine, James Cameron is income on the future of the Avatar saga. After the first film released in 2009 (re-released in cinemas this year), the sequel is coming late! Necessarily, many still have doubts that the saga is still creating excitementwith this sequence which only comes out thirteen years later the first episode. From what he says in the magazine, it seems that the director is also still waiting: he doesn’t know if the public will follow him.
Today, we are in a different world from the one we were in when I wrote this stuff. It’s the double whammy – the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, people may be reminded of what it’s like to go see movies in theaters. This film clearly has that effect. The question is: how many people still give a fuck? (sic: “how many people give a shit now?”)
“Let’s Not Go On Forever”
One could take this kind of statement for a form of promotion via provocation. As if James Cameron doesn’t really think that people don’t care about his movie and going to the cinema anymore, but he is saying that for the push to do it in order to prove him wrong. Except that the rest of the Titanic director’s statements in Total Film show that it’s not just provocation: he really doubts the success of his blockbuster.
The market could tell us we’re done in three months, or we could be half done, which would mean, “OK, let’s finish the story in the third movie, and don’t go on forever,” if that’s not the case. just isn’t profitable.
While Avatar 3, 4 and 5 are already planned by Disney for the next few years, Cameron therefore seems less confident than the firm. If he is sure to release Avatar 3however successful Avatar 2: The Way of Water is, it clearly says here that the sequels greatly depend on the numbers generated by this new episode. Relatively surprising statements when the premieres will take place in the next few dayswe cannot say that he is doing the best promotion for his film here.
Are we already working on Avatar 3?
If it is as certain to go out Avatar 3it is also probably because it already knows in part what he intends to put in it.
There are a few elements that I took from The Way of the Water that I hope to incorporate into the third film. (…) They are horribly expensive films. It was a rather risky project economically to make a film that was so expensive before the pandemic. At this point we just have to launch it and see what happens. But what I know right now is that we’re delivering three hours of a pretty crazy experience.
let’s remember that Cameron had cast doubt on his presence for the following films. In a statement last July, he explained that he did not know if he would continue to make the Avatar movies after the third or fourth installment. Remember that he is a regular: he had realized the first two Terminator before leaving the hand, for example. He also had directed Aliens, The Return, the second episode of the saga, but not the first (directed by Ridley Scott), nor the following ones. Achieving sequels is always a challengebecause you have to constantly renew yourself without losing the essence of the success of the first episode.
The key to a sequel is to be surprising in a way that won’t put off the audience. To reconnect with what is familiar to him, what had amused him and made it a good film, and which made the first opus a success. But do it in a way that’s unexpected, or that takes you places you didn’t expect.
