In times of inflation, Sony triggered some discussions with the price increase of the Playstation 5. Would Microsoft and Nintendo price their consoles up as well? Both manufacturers originally denied this option. But a current statement from Nintendo on the subject may cause some concern. Specifically, these are statements by Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki. This reported on a earnings report from the company, in which it was again emphasized that a price increase for the console was not planned for the time being. At the same time, the company does not rule out an increase in the future. We would continue to monitor the situation carefully and act accordingly. Now, of course, the question arises as to how realistic a future price increase for the console is.
How likely is a more expensive Switch?
Gamespot cites the statement by NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, who commented on the speculation on Twitter: “No one is raising the price of a six-year-old console that is nearing the end of its lifecycle in a more competitive console environment,” Piscatella said. However, the tweet has since been deleted. It is also unclear to what extent a possible successor to the Switch (buy now €333.00) or a Switch Pro, such as Techradar is bringing into play in this context, could have an impact on this topic.
So it’s hard to tell if this is a matter of time before we see a pricier Switch, or a matter of when and how Nintendo’s next piece of hardware will launch. For example, the author of the Techradar article, Rhys Wood, certainly expects prices to rise in the future.
