Coronalert, the app that kept us informed about potential corona infections for two years, is no more.
Coronalert was put forward during the corona crisis as a way to notify risk contacts of someone with a corona infection. The app was installed by about 4 million Belgians.
These users will soon be notified that they can remove the app. Thanks to the adjusted test policy and the reduced number of corona infections, it no longer makes sense to continue using the app. The app will also be removed from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
People who want to continue using the app are worth it. Every month, the Coronalert app cost about 50,000 euros in government money to continue working. So the Coronalert back-end also stops working, causing the app to lose its functions.
In the event that the pandemic suddenly regains strength, the government always has the option of making the app available again. It is true that there is a start-up cost associated with this, which also amounts to approximately 50,000 euros. As long as it is not deemed necessary, the app will not be reactivated.
