Google isn’t known for being the best brand that keeps its secrets. But there is one product that the company really wanted to hide, but that’s without counting the tenacity of Jon Prosser. So here’s everything we know about Google’s next foldable smartphone.
Google’s first foldable smartphone
Jon Prosser is one of the most prolific informants, particularly on the Apple side. Without always being right, he is nevertheless “100% sure” of the information he has just revealed to us. Thanks to his sources, Jon received videos and “other things” allowing him to share his discovery with us. As usual and in order to protect these sources, the video shows us 3D renderings of the real images.
As you can see in the images, the Google Pixel Fold looks like a Pixel 7 Pro, but still adopts some new design touches, especially on the camera module on the back. On the front, the thin-bezel outer display is fitted with a simple punch-hole for the 9.5MP selfie camera.
The device looks pretty chunky and made entirely of metal and glass, but also totally flat. Due to the fold, models like the Galaxy Fold cannot close completely. This is the case here. But on the other hand, when you open it, the interior screen is certainly large but surrounded by rather thick borders. No punch, just big bars top and bottom for the other 9.5MP selfie camera too.
What gives the imposing appearance to this Pixel Fold is the screen ratio. Unlike the competition from Samsung, Google relies on an interior screen with a more “normal” ratio and therefore less stretched in height, and therefore more comfortable to use. But the thing is, with the materials and the size, it’s heavy, very heavy.
The fingerprint sensor is not under the screen but placed on the ignition button. Only two colors would be available at launch: white and black.
Price and release date of the Google Pixel Fold?
The project dubbed “Passport” internally has been pushed back several times by Google, but a release date has finally been set for May 2023. The device should be released at the same time as the Pixel Tablet, another ambitious project from the brand to return to the tablet market.
Don’t expect to get a cheap product. For a first folder with premium materials, we hope powerful and equipped with 5G, it’s not cheap: Jon Prosser announces 1799 dollars as the starting price. We can therefore expect to see a similar amount in euros, or even more. It’s expensive, but not that much if we compare it to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Korean brand’s latest folding case sold at €1,799.
