Toyota has presented the new Prius for 2023. The latest hybrid will be the most fuel-efficient car the Japanese have ever built.
The unveiling of the 2023 Prius took place at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, in the US. To achieve extremely low consumption (how much exactly is not yet known), Toyota has combined a number of techniques. For example, the center of gravity of the car has been lowered in the first place, and the driver’s seat is also slightly lower. The roofline is 5 cm lower than the current model and the new Prius is 2.54 cm wider.
In the US, the Prius will already have an LE, XLE and Limited version. Toyota has clearly gone for a sportier look and the rims of the last two versions are noticeably larger, perhaps to improve aerodynamics.
New drivetrain and battery
Under the hood is Toyota’s 5th generation hybrid powertrain, coupled to a new high-performance lithium-ion battery. It must be able to supply 15 percent more power than the old nickel batteries of the previous generation. The new battery is even smaller and lighter than the current Prius. Also surprising is that the electric motor is assisted by a fairly large petrol engine of up to 2 liters.
The total engine power is thus 194 hp and the new Prius goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.2 seconds. That’s not exactly fast for a hybrid car, but economical driving (and therefore a long range) has always been the number one priority with the Prius. The Eco mode should squeeze everything out, but if you still want to drive a bit sporty, you can improve the throttle response with Power and Sport, although the car may not be (much) faster.
Toyota has also provided half a dozen USB-C ports and the Toyota Audio Multimedia system provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. In addition, the Connected Service Drive Connect gives drivers access to an intelligent assistant that can work with voice commands and cloud navigation. The latter means that the system can retrieve the most recent maps and traffic information live from the cloud.
Smart security tech
In terms of safety assistance, Toyota has provided blind spot technology that monitors the traffic behind you and gives warnings if you want to merge. The Limited version (the top version, say) even gets a 360-degree camera and a hands-free system that helps drivers park. Toyota’s Safety Sense was also a must. This also avoids collisions through pedestrian detection and a notification for vehicles changing lanes.
Toyota has not yet announced what the 2023 Prius will cost. All details should be known before the end of the year.
