As Crystal Dynamics’ CEO Phil Rogers promised in the context of Embracer Group’s latest annual report, Unreal Engine 5 will enable his studio to take the “Tomb Raider” series to the next level in terms of storytelling. However, further details on the future of the series are not expected until 2023.
After taking over the North American division of Square Enix in May this year, the developers at Crystal Dynamics are now working on the future of the “Tomb Raider” series under the auspices of the Embracer Group.
As we have known for a while, Crystal Dynamics is currently developing a completely new offshoot of the successful series. Phil Rogers, the CEO of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, did not give any specific details about the project in the course of the Embracer Group’s current business figures, but in a statement he emphasized the importance of the Unreal Engine 5, which his studios are now working with.
According to Rogers, the technical capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 will enable Crystal Dynamics developers to take the Tomb Raider series to the next level in terms of storytelling.
No new information before 2023
“For us, it’s fundamentally about the deep-rooted partnerships we’re building for the future of Tomb Raider as a popular gaming and/or media franchise. Our partnership with Epic Games and the integration of Unreal Engine 5 into our development toolchain allows us to take storytelling to a new level,” said Rogers.
However, fans of Lara Croft’s adventures will have to be patient before new information or even announcements about the future of the “Tomb Raider” series can be expected. There is nothing to announce before 2023, as Rogers acknowledged in his statement: “We have not yet released details on the franchise plans, but the team looks forward to showing where we are headed as soon as possible next year move.”
