The original Pac-Man World saw the light of day on the PSone in 1999 and delighted us at the time. The yellow ball’s first real 3D detour was not only a step forward visually, but also cleverly combined typical labyrinth sections with (at the time) more modern jump’n’run influences – 85% and an “It’s a MAN!AC” -Predicate were awarded by the tester.
It is precisely this tester who is puzzled by the new edition almost 23 years later Re-Pac about several things: Why doesn’t this inspire him nearly as much today? And why didn’t Bandai Namco put more effort into it? In any case, almost everything remains playful as it was four hardware generations ago: Pac runs, rolls and jumps through colorful scenarios, kills enemies with head jumps, solves more or less tough switch puzzles and munches through interspersed mazes – that still works passable, but it works plenty dusty.
There are only changes in the details: If you swallow a power pill, the star will not only be powerful, but also much bigger. As usual, Pac-Mom replaces Ms. Pac-Man and her name is officially confirmed as that in the video intro. And again a porting of the originalPac-Man included, but it must now only be unlocked by completing the main game.
