This is an event that will undoubtedly go down in the history of the video game press: almost all of Gamekult’s editorial staff resigned by activating its transfer clause following the takeover of Unify by Reworld Media. The site, founded in 2000, will continue to exist.

Gamekult: “A reflection conducted for several months”
In a live broadcast on Twitch Thursday, November 17, journalists from the site specializing in video games Gamekult announced that they would resign from the editorial staff. An effective departure from December 7 as specified by Nicolas “Puyo” Verlet, the editor-in-chief, during the live. A decision that seems well thought out:
This concerns almost all of the extended editorial staff: the editors, the JRIs, but also our freelancers. (…) This is a reflection that we have been conducting for several months, since the announcement of the takeover. Do not imagine that we leave on a whim.
We say it again: this is not a failure of the subscription, the situation and our decision depend on other factors. More than ever you must continue to fight for the independence of the press, both specialized and general.

A takeover announcement made at the end of June. It was at the beginning of the summer that the members of the editorial staff of Gamekult learned that TF1 had sold Unify (which brings together several digital-related media, such as Les Numériques) to the Reworld Media group.

A few months later, the change of shareholders is recorded and Gamekult employees are informed of the opening of their assignment clause on October 28. A clause specific to the profession of journalist which allows the concerned to keep his rights to unemployment and to receive his severance pay in the event of transfer or change of shareholders. Compensation equal to one month’s salary per year of work.
Founded in 2000, the online magazine Gamekult is considered a pillar of the French press specializing in video games: 22 years is almost an eternity for a media in this field. If the departure of almost all of the editorial staff undoubtedly marks a turning point in the history of Gamekult, we must emphasize that this is not the end of the website : as mentioned in the press release shared by the editorial staff, “the site will continue its activity to ensure the transition with the new editorial staff”. What will the future hold for Gamekult? Even today, the direction taken by Reworld Media is still unknown. It was Karyl Ait Kaci Ali, staff representative at Unify Tech, who told Le Monde newspaper “that despite the meetings we have been able to have, we still have no clear elements concerning Unify’s development plans.”
This is a situation that has already been seen for Reworld Media, owner of numerous magazines such as Grazia: in 2019, several journalists from the magazine Science & Vie had activated their transfer clause following its takeover of the Mondadori France group.
