As you know, the Dark Web is chock full of more or less strange and legal goods and services. This excellent graph illustrates very well the best-selling products on the Dark Web, as well as the price to pay to obtain them. So, will the pictures be confirmed or denied?
Dark Web / Deep Web: before talking about products, we must lay out the definitions
Let’s start by tackling the most common error: do not confuse Dark Web and Deep Web. The Deep Web is the submerged part of the internet iceberg. This is the huge mass of content that is not indexed by traditional search engines. The Dark Web is only a fraction of this Deep Web. A fraction accessible via what are called darknets. To popularize, we can say that these are particular browsers, the best known being Tor.
Among the general public, the Dark Web has an image as dark as its sensationalist name. Know that originally, it was never a question of obscure traffic, but of freedom. By accessing another facet of the web completely anonymously, we are effectively freed from all attempts at surveillance by private and public groups. It was to be expected: many people used this anonymization to set up disastrous enterprises.
Even if the Dark Web is not used at all for that, you have to be blind to believe that it is not a huge platform for buying and selling illegal goods and services. Billions of euros circulate under the radar. In the collective fantasy, we find on the Dark Web malware, drugs, weapons or even contract killers willing to act against a tidy sum. Between illusory perceptions and reality, difficult to see clearly… at least, until now.
Thanks to the immense data compilation work carried out by Privacy Affairs, a Spaniard named Enrique Mendoza has created an extremely telling graphic representation. At a glance, it’s easy to understand which soundst the most popular products on the Dark Web but also and above all their prix. Here is the beast:

The Dark Web is less a platform for reselling weapons and drugs… than information
Among the top sellers on the Dark Web, there are hardly any of the shots mentioned earlier. If you speak a little bit of English, you will realize that the graph above shows that most transactions involve personal data, broadly defined. Thus, we find above all traffic of:
Data base hacked, in particular banking; Passports, driving licenses, false papers in general ;Premium accounts Netflix or other web services (from social networks to adult sites); cryptocurrencies ;Sites web ;Viruses and others malware.
Not only are most Dark Web sales not about the products you might have in mind at first sight, but the amounts involved also have nothing to do with the ready-made ideas that are circulating the most. Wholesale dark items is actually extremely rare. In the reall, most goods and services traded on the Dark Web are worth a handful of dollars.
Supporting this analysis, digital risk protection firm Terbium Labs released an exciting Dark Web analytics report just last year. According to this studynothing sells better than scam tutorials for dummies. Small guides that generally sell for €7.88. The sale of personal data would come 2nd in the ranking according to Terbium Labs. Average price ? 8.45€.
Finally, the only somewhat expensive things that sell well on the Dark Web are not weapons, drugs or even humans, but… malware. As you can see, we reach 5500€ for 1000 PCs infected with a “premium virus”.
