Are you one of those people who unplug everything to save money? Honestly, I’ve always found this practice counterproductive, and of course impractical. But the truth is that these days, every crumb counts, such is the price of electricity.
Let’s try to understand what kind of savings this practice brings to the table?
Turn off the TV, Console, or Speakers from the plug to save money? It is worth it?
So, in case you have no idea, the TV, together with all the devices connected to your television set, can consume an apparently insignificant amount of electricity, but that added up, for all hours of the day, week, month, year… mean some money thrown in the trash.
What is Stand-By mode?
It is a mode that allows the TV, or other type of electronic device, to receive a small amount of electrical energy even when turned off. This means that it is possible to turn it on via the remote, and of course, it also allows for faster boot times. Basically, the TV is “asleep”! It’s not on, nor is it completely off.
However, this depends on the efficiency of each device. There are super efficient TVs, which in standby only consume something like 1~5W. While others may consume 10~20W.
Having said all that, if we add your IPTV provider’s box (~25W), the console (~12W), the speakers (~25W), among other devices, maybe we’ve already reached 50~60W of energy consumed for… Well … Anything.
Shall we do math?
First of all, let’s consider a setup capable of consuming about 50W per hour. After this value, we have to multiply it by the hours in a year, and of course, divide by 1000, which is the unit of kW (the default).
50W (Energy consumed per hour) * 8760 (hours in a year) / 1000 (pass to kW) = 438 kWh
In Portugal, we will use an average of 18 cents per kW (including VAT).
438 kWh * 0.18€ = 78.84€
In short, if you have a TV + Console + Operator Box + Column/Soundbar setup that spends about 50W per hour in StandBy. We are talking about an expense of more or less €80 per year.
Also, what do you think about all this? Do you usually turn everything off? Or press the button on the remote and go to sleep? Share your opinion with us in the comments box below.
