The era of 3nm-based processors has officially started at the production stage. Both Samsung and TSMC have already started manufacturing this type of processors.
TSMC will even be able to supply Apple with 3 nm chips for the upcoming iPhone 15 series. But the production costs of these processors will be reflected in the final price of Apple’s smartphone, which will arrive more expensive than previously thought.
3nm chip could make iPhone 15 more expensive
Some iPhone 15 models should already arrive equipped with processors based on the 3 nm process [email protected]
Apple has never had smartphones considered cheap and the latest generation 14 launched is a reflection of this strategy with the base model having a price that starts at 1,039 euros. But according to the latest rumors, the iPhone 15 series may arrive with higher starting prices than expected.
The reason for this to happen is due to the new processors based on the 3nm process that have already started to be produced in scale by Samsung and TSMC. The latter is Apple’s supplier and will be able to deliver these new chips to the Cupertino company in time for the mass production of the new iPhone 15 series.
If we evaluate only the technical part, this is great news for Apple smartphone users. Remember that the smaller the number of process nodes, the more transistors will be on the chip which will be more powerful in performance and more energy efficient.
But the good news has a bittersweet taste. All because the manufacturing process of the new 3 nm chips will increase substantially. For comparison purposes, prices will double from the 7nm to the 3nm process.
As it could not fail to happen, this increase in costs will be directly reflected in the final retail price of the iPhone 15, which will arrive with a higher initial cost than expected.
Unfortunately, at this distance from the launch, it is not yet possible to come up with a prediction of a concrete value, but Apple fans should already be maturing the idea in their heads, since it will be something inevitable.
In 2023, we will see the arrival of processors based on the 3 nm process on the market. It is already known that both Samsung and TSMC have plans for 2nm chips to arrive in 2025 and better chips based on 1nm process may even arrive in 2030.
But of course, the greater the technical advance, the greater the cost of its production and the more expensive smartphones equipped with these new processors will be.
