On Wednesday, November 23, in Lviv at the Arena Lviv stadium, the match of the fifteenth round of the Ukrainian Premier League in football will take place, in which Shakhtar Donetsk and Vorskla Poltava will play. The starting whistle of the referee Nikolai Balakin from the Kyiv region will sound at 14:00 Kyiv time.
The decisive battle in the first round of the national championship for the team of Igor Jovicevich already took place last weekend. Shakhtar Donetsk lost the decisive match in the fight for the first line of the UPL standings to Dnipro-1 Dnipro (1:2), essentially failing the second half of an extremely important confrontation. And already a day after this sad event for the Pitmen, information began to appear in the press that in 2022 the Pitmen would no longer play official matches, except for the upcoming one, leaving two games in reserve for the spring part of the season. This decision was subsequently confirmed by the championship calendar for the remaining days before the start of the winter break.
Obviously, the mood in Shakhtar’s dressing room is far from being the most joyful. Jovichevich’s team is already eight points behind SK with the prospect of increasing the distance if, on the day of the game between them and Vorskla, Oleksandr Kucher’s players beat Oleksandriya in the postponed game of the first round with a corresponding misfire of competitors. Quite early at the same time, the Pitmen decided to open the program of the 15th round of national competitions with their match, the reasons for which are rather difficult to explain.
The functional level of the Orange-and-Blacks had to pass its peak today, and gradually go into hibernation, which, with a high degree of probability, resulted in an unsuccessful second half against Dnipro-1. Of the additional negative consequences of the previous game – Yefim Konoplya was injured, having already undergone an operation to remove an inguinal hernia. Taking into account the losses of Marian Shved and Oleksandr Zubkov earlier due to damage, Shakhtar had big problems with the right flank before the winter. Lucas Taylor is indispensable in such conditions, but his performance in the match against Dnipro, to put it mildly, was not impressive.
Poltava “Vorskla” for a long time retained the status of a team that was the only one among the UPL clubs who managed to play all their matches on time in the new season. For Viktor Skrypnyk, who went through a long-term school of German football, such a pedantic approach should have opened up new opportunities, so his team managed to make up for the fantastic failure at the start of the season with subsequent results. As expected, the current season of the Ukrainian championship turns out to be quite equal in terms of the team’s capabilities, so even a small streak of successful results allows us to overcome long distances in the standings.
“Vorskla” is now in sixth place, while having no prospects of influencing the position of the superior “Alexandria”. For Poltava, in general, this result is acceptable, as they not only began to score points in matches where it is expected of them, but also gradually began to show their teeth in games with eminent teams. Skrypnyk’s team played good football in the recent match against Dnipro-1 and even did what Shakhtar failed to do – achieved a draw (1:1).
The next was a victory over Kolos (2:1), but it didn’t come easy either – the central defender Sergei Yavorsky went through the yellow cards, so Skripnik will have to take risks with the appearance of young performers, or transfer one of the midfield players to the defense, which has already happened several times during the current season. The condition of the experienced Oleksandr Sklyar after being injured in the game against Dnipro-1 remains a secret with seven seals.
The football paths of Shakhtar and Vorskla have previously crossed 62 times within the UPL and the Ukrainian Cup. There is a significant advantage in terms of the number of wins on the part of the guests – 45 successful games for Shakhtar, 12 draws, 5 victories for Vorskla. The last time the opponents played in an official match was in October last year – the game in Poltava ended with the victory of the guests with a score of 2:0. The Donetsk team excelled Tete and Manor Solomon.
The main arbiter of the upcoming game will be 33-year-old Nikolai Balakin from the Kyiv region, who has already played 71 matches in the “elite” division. Side referees will be Alexander Zhukov and Dmitry Zaporozhenko, and Evgeny Aranovsky will work as a reserve referee. The match will also be attended by the VAR system with Viktor Kopievsky and Andriy Skrypka at the head. Romanov has experience in playing matches with Shakhtar – 12 wins, one draw, two losses, while he faced Vorskla 10 times (5 wins, 1 draw, 4 losses).
“Miners”: Trubin – Mykhailichenko, Matviyenko, Bondar, Taylor – Stepanenko – Mudryk, Sudakov, Bondarenko, Kryskiv – Traore.
“Vorskla”: Riznyk – Kravets, Zaikov, Pavlyuk, Perduta – Chelyadin – Sefery, Yurchenko, Oleynyk, Batsula – Stepaniuk.
