If it is built at all, of course.
Amid talk of TSMC’s intentions to build another facility in Arizona, which would be engaged in the production of 3-nm products, everyone forgot about the rumors that attributed the company’s desire to build a facility in Europe. To be more precise, according to DigiTimes, the company is interested in the possibility of building an enterprise in Europe, which could produce 28-nm chips for local automakers.

In fact, the situation with TSMC’s plans in the German direction is reminiscent of the Japanese one, where a joint venture is already being built, the shareholders of which will be Sony and Denso. If the first will be enough to receive 28-nm image sensors for smartphone cameras from its conveyor, then the second will encourage partners to launch in Japan the production of 12-nm chips for automotive systems, which are supposed to be exported. Based on the available description of the legislative initiatives of the European authorities, the future TSMC plant in Germany is unlikely to qualify for state subsidies. At the same time, TSMC representatives do not get tired of repeating that it is the subsidization of new projects outside of Taiwan that can at least slightly bring the cost of chips produced outside the island to the costs inside Taiwan. The difference with the United States in this area is expected to be at least one and a half times.
