November 24th, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. by Susanne Braun – Crowfall, officially an MMORPG with a PvP focus and real-time strategy elements, left the ranks of online role-playing games still in operation on November 22nd, 2022. This probably comes as no surprise to most adventurers of wild and strange virtual worlds: the launch of the MMO in 2021 was already accompanied by problems.
A successful Kickstarter campaign does not make a successful MMO, as those of you who don’t only have your eyes on the big online role-playing games like WoW, FFXIV, SWTOR or others know that. Crowfall from the developers of the US studio ArtCraft is a MMORPG with a focus on PvP and some features reminiscent of real-time strategy titles. Or rather: Crowfall was this MMORPG. Because the servers of the game have been offline since November 22, 2022, which was a little over a year old by then – and so Crowfall is a case for the MMO graveyard.
You can read the official reason for this on the Crowfall website: “One of the biggest challenges was the enormous development effort it took to create new campaigns and keep the game running on a daily basis. To extend our efforts from live operations to the To focus on development, we have decided to take the Crowfall Live service offline for the time being,” say the folks at ArtCraft.
Crowfall in the end – or not in the end?
But the ending doesn’t have to be final, they say. “We will use this time to plan the future of the game. We have yet to determine what that will look like, but we are investing and rethinking every part of the game – from the core technology and tools to the art, design and… Gameplay. Nothing can be denied.” However, anyone who has followed the development of Crowfall on our website or on other websites with an MMO focus will be rather skeptical about this news.

The developers of Crowfall reacted to the low number of players in the launch week via Twitter.
Because the launch of the game in July 2021, after a quite successful Kickstarter campaign in 2018, was of no interest to anyone. Player counts were well below the amount of MMO fans who once spent money on the campaign, and the developers were apparently so embarrassed that they took bots out of the interface to read player counts.
