In an argument against the takeover of Activision – Blizzard by Microsoft, Sony has unveiled a date after which the PS6 should be released!
The majority of gamers don’t have a PlayStation 5 yet, and we imagine that several models of this console will eventually come out. But Sony already has an idea of when its PlayStation 6 could be released …
Sony continues to develop its pitch to regulators
Microsoft and Sony have published arguments, relayed by the Competition and Markets Authority of the United Kingdom, about the takeover of Activision – Blizzard by Microsoft. In his argumentation de 22 pagesSony unveiled a information identified then by TheGamer.com, which concerns the future PlayStation 6. Throughout the document, we find the arguments already heard at Sony, in particular on the fundamental importance of the Call of Duty franchise. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the exclusivity of such a popular license with a manufacturer would inflict serious damage to market competition. Especially, if Call of Duty games stop being released on PlayStation consoles before the next generation launches!
The PS6, not before 2027
And precisely, a part of this argument in particular draws the attention market observers:
Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision games available on PlayStation only until 2027. Similarly, in public comments dated October 26, Microsoft said it plans to make Call of Duty available on PlayStation only “as that makes sense.” A period lasting until 2027 – or some other (possibly shorter) period that Microsoft unilaterally determines “makes sense” to Microsoft – is totally inadequate. When Sony Interactive Entertainment will have launched the next generation from his PlayStation console (which should happen around XXX*), he would have already lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, which would make it extremely vulnerable to the change of consumer and the subsequent deterioration of its competitiveness. Even assuming that SIE had the ability and resources to develop a franchise with success comparable to Call of Duty, it would take many years and billions of dollars to create a challenger for Call of Duty – and the example of Battlefield from EA shows that such efforts would more than likely be in vain.
* XXX: The date is censored in the document
As you have seen, the release window envisaged by Sony for its next generation is censored, but the Japanese manufacturer still gives us an idea. Indeed, Sony explains here that even if Microsoft guaranteed to launch Activision games on Sony consoles until 2027, it would not be enough. Because that would mean for Sony that at by the time they launch their next console, they will have already lost Activision games previously ! We therefore understand that PlayStation 6 won’t be released until 2027. This would therefore give a lifespan of at least seven years to the current generation, launched in November 2020. It is a lifespan similar to previous generationswhich have always lasted between six and seven years at Sony: PS1 – 1994, PS2 – 2000, PS3 – 2006, PS4 – 2013, PS5 – 2020. With the delays that the current generation has takenespecially due to the pandemic, it is quite possible that this one lasts a little longer, however.

It will therefore be necessary to wait a few years before knowing exactly when the PlayStation 6 will be released. What is certain is that we will know by then whether Sony players can still count on Call of Duty… or not!
