For some time the series of NieR has made inroads into the hearts of players, thanks in particular to NieR Automata which has been able to convince critics and the public with its playful, artistic and narrative qualities. Also NieR Replicantreissue of the original NieR, has been able to give a lot of satisfaction to the fans.
The impact of the two works, in particular by Automata, was consequently reflected on the commercial front. According to new updated data released by Square EnixNieR Automata placed in total over seven million copies since the launch (which took place in February 2017 in Japan on PS4and a month later also in Europe and the United States, also in version PC), calculating both physical and digital versions. Over the years, the acclaimed Action/RPG has also been revived on Xbox One (in 2018), to then finally land on Nintendo Switch in 2022 through the The End of YoRHa Edition (for more details here is our special on NieR Automata for Nintendo Switch)
Much smaller numbers for NieR Replicant, however released in much more recent times: since its debut on PC, PS4 and Xbox One which took place in April 2021, more than one and a half million copies. However, positive results for a series that risked not continuing: originally, in fact, Square Enix was skeptical about the potential of NieR Automata in light of the limited success of the original NieR, thus pushing the producer Yosuke Saito to threaten to quit.
As we have seen, things have turned out very differently, and the NieR series now enjoys a much more consistent following globally than in the past.
