If lovers of big sound in the car tend to bet on the biggest speakers possible to get noticed, some of them may be greatly disturbed by the model developed by LG. Indeed, the manufacturer tends to bet on discretion, but does not compromise in terms of power.
South Korean automaker LG could bury the big speaker that takes up the entire trunk of the car with its Thin Actuator Sound Solution. This is a new type of vibration membrane which is barely 2.5 millimeters thickand which is capable, depending on the brand, of delivering an immersive 3D sound experience.
Goodbye big speakers, hello ultra-thin with LG
The interest of this technology developed by LG Display is obvious: it makes it possible to miniaturize a speaker to make it extremely flat. The goal is to be able install it in a car, for example in the dashboard, in the doors or even directly in the seat, without taking up space. With dimensions of only 150 x 90 x 2.5 mm, the size of a passport, there is probably no shortage of possibilities.
But that’s not all : the manufacturer ensures that the power of this “invisible” speaker can equal that of a traditional sound system, much larger. “The built-in nature of the device not only allows speaker grilles to be removed, but also improves space utilization by freeing up the space normally taken up by car speakers, all without compromising the sound quality,” explains the brand.
Otherwise, LG Display has managed to eliminate the use of rare earths in the design of this speaker, especially the neodymium that is usually found in this type of device. “This reinforces the ecological dimension of this speaker”, assures LG.
Marketing planned for 2023
This new technology is no longer at the prototype stage: this is a working productwhich LG intends to market “from the first half of 2023”, to “inaugurate a new era of automotive infotainment”, summarizes the manufacturer.
While waiting to find it in vehicles sold by certain manufacturers in the years to come, LG Display intends to present the Thin Actuator Sound Solution to both the press and potential investors during the CES show, which will take place in Las Vegas in January 2023. This will also be an opportunity for LG to lift the veil on the “international audio company” with which the firm has decided to partner to develop this project.
Well-sighted tuning enthusiasts may start to shiver : soon, the size of the speakers will no longer matter for vibrating cars on the packs on Sunday afternoons. However, they should still have some time to get used to the idea, because it’s a safe bet that LG’s technology will be very expensive when it comes out.
