In an interview, Glauco Longhi, the character director behind the horror title, spoke about the sources of inspiration that went into working on the monsters and infected in The Callisto Protocol. Among these were cartoons like “Spongebob”.
Shortly before the release of the ambitious survival horror title, the developers at Striking Distance Studios gave us another look behind the scenes of “The Callisto Protocol” in an interview.
This time, Glauco Longhi, the responsible character designer, spoke a little about the creation of the game world and also went into the sources of inspiration that were used for the work on the monsters or infected. Interestingly, Longhi not only mentioned other horror games or horror films in this context.
Longhi also mentioned various cartoons that one should not have had on the list in this context. Including “Spongebob” and the way the characters move here.
Special actions should be highlighted
“However, some creatures came from an art perspective, like, ‘Hey, let’s just make something that looks very crazy. And then we bring that into play and find a way to make it work.’ Even some cartoons like Spongebob. We look at cartoons in terms of stylization and movement because while it’s super real and immersive, we’ve stylized a lot of things to make it more engaging,” Longhi elaborated.
“With the blood and the way we remove the limbs, there’s a style push to highlight some of those actions. Animated cartoons do that very well. Disney, Pixar or whatever – they get the message across to you right away. If there is a fast character, you can recognize him immediately by the strong silhouettes.”
