According to SONY, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard would make it the sole go-to place for shooters on consoles.
SONY has once again criticized the British competition and market surveillance authority for a possible takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. After a possible Call of Duty exclusivity was the main argument against the takeover, it is now about the entire shooter genre.
In its filing, SONY says the acquisition would result in Microsoft’s rise to become the single source for shooters on consoles. In addition to the in-house brands Halo, Gears of War and Perfect Dark, well-known brands such as Call of Duty, Overwatch, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Quake or Prey would expand Microsoft’s exclusive range:
“After the transaction, Xbox would become the one-stop shop for all top-grossing shooter franchises on consoles (Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, Overwatch) and would then be free from serious competitive constraints.”
“Call of Duty has become synonymous with the FPS category and is the benchmark by which all other FPS games are measured.”
