Already a month since Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was released, and it has recently been accompanied by Warzone 2.0, the new battle royale experience. Highly anticipated, the title of Activision, around which the tensions concerning the takeover by Microsoft are concentrated, has met with immense success. What motivates them to develop to offer more?
2023: a year “without” Call of Duty?
If you follow Call of Duty news, you know that one of the rumors the most insistent indicates that there will be no new opus in 2023. Activision would focus on adding content through map and miscellaneous packs as well as developing the Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 experience, before returning in 2024 with an episode ready to smash it all. Insiders don’t always agree on this possible timeline, and Activision maintains vagueness in its statements when talking about Premium content in 2023, without specifying its nature. There is also talk of a large paid extension, able to occupy the players during this “absence”.
For the moment, the publisher has not announced anything, but the rumor of a new campaign for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has resurfaced, having been endorsed by Bloomberg’s inevitable Jason Schreier. The return of this additional campaign rumor, we owe it to What If Gaming, with an article by Ralph Valve. A little over a month ago, Brian Bloom, lead writer at Infinty Ward, had expressed to IGN his desire to make a spin-off around Simon “Ghost” Rileyone of the most iconic characters of the license:
There are others who would like to do that too (…), and we think it would be really interesting. (…) I think the public would like, and we would like to launch.
A development already in progress?
According to our colleagues, Infinity Ward is indeed developing a campaign dedicated to Ghost, allowing to expand the story of the masked character. Work would have started right out of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, but during the development of the initial game, the teams would have approached Samuel Roukin, the actor playing Ghostin order to see with him if he was ready to participate in the development of his character.
For now, What If Gaming unclear if it’s this campaign behind the big expansion rumor for 2023. A request for comment has been sent to Activision, but the publisher is unlikely to provide a clear answer on the subject. First appearing in 2009’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Ghost soon became one of the characters player favorites with his famous mask in the shape of a skull, as evidenced by the many references that can be found alongside thousands of fan art. And you, would you like to go through an adventure entirely dedicated to Ghost?
