One might think that Cyberpunk 2077 was a flop due to the numerous bugs and technical problems. It’s not, in fact, the game is making for the studio’s best quarter of the year.
We all still remember the catastrophic launch of Cyberpunk 2077 with umpteen bugs and technical problems. It even went so far that Sony banned the game from the Playstation Store. Thanks to the numerous patches, it is now available in all stores again and makes the registers ring – with effective help from the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
In a way, the game was successful anyway. In the launch year 2020, 13.7 million copies were sold, meanwhile the number has risen to over 20 million. And since the start of the Netflix series, the game has consistently achieved impressive player counts across all platforms. The series itself made the top 10 in 19 countries and received rave reviews.
The rework on Cyberpunk 2077 and the Netflix series are now paying off. In its latest financial report, CD Projekt revealed that the success of the Edgerunners anime boosted sales and led the studio to a new quarterly record. Cleverly, CDPR also released update 1.6 with Edgerunners content alongside the series, which certainly helped players give the game a second chance.
“Financially, this was the best third quarter in our entire history, with consolidated sales of PLN 246 million ($54.3 million), largely thanks to strong Cyberpunk sales,” said CD Projekt Chief Financial Officer Piort Nielubowicz. “The group made a net profit of PLN 99 million ($21.8 million).”
There is currently no end in sight for cyberpunk. A second season of the series is not planned, but Cyberpunk 2077 will get a full expansion with Phantom Liberty next year, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has already been confirmed alongside a number of Witcher titles.
