In the run-up to the Nintendo Direct, new pictures of the movie were leaked. Characters like Luigi and Princess Peach found their way to the public via social media. The new designs of the characters unsurprisingly fit perfectly into the style of the first trailer. In the film, Mario, Bowser & Co. look confusingly similar to the originals from the games, but appear more lively and detailed.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant provided the answer on Tuesday, November 29, at 11:00 p.m. CET, as announced. New Nintendo Direct Reveals Mario Kart In Upcoming Movie
As the creator of Mario and producer of the film, Shigeru Myamotu took the opportunity to personally greet the viewers at the new Nintendo Direct.
