Unlike its predecessors, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the first title in the series to be a true open world. This time, in fact, the story is not linear and it is up to the player to decide which path to follow to capture every creature in Paldea.
Three paths to explore
After spending the first few days among the benches of the academy for aspiring Pokémon trainers, Scarlet and Violet offers the player three different paths that can be freely completed. You can decide if face the gym leaders of Paldea thanks to the quest of Nemi, go to spice hunting for Pepe or put a spoke in Team Star’s works by defeating his henchmen around the bases as suggested by Cassiopeia. Regardless of what your favorite activity is, know that there are no limits of any kind and that it is possible to go from a gym to a Team Star hideout seamlessly, not to mention that the same missions of a specific path can be complete in the order you prefer.
Map and points of interest
Once the adventure around Paldea begins, the player is left free to decide his first goal. Precisely for this reason, it becomes essential use the map consistentlysince the checkpoints to be reached for the various missions are not visible on the mini-map that is always present on the screen and it is necessary to set a destination for orientation. In this regard, we suggest that you always have a sign to reach on the map: to do so, just open the map with the taste Ymove the cursor to the point you want to go to and press A, selecting the option ‘Set as destination’. This way you’ll always see an on-screen marker indicating the location of the target, making navigation easier.
Quests and difficulties
Despite being an open world title, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet does not give up a typical feature of role-playing games: each area of Paldea offers a different level of challenge and the creatures that inhabit it differ. This implies that immediately reaching an area whose Pokémon are too strong is strongly discouraged, since it would be impossible to even scratch the monsters that you should be able to capture with a Poké Ball. The trick to understanding which areas of Paldea are the most accessible is to open the map and read the descriptions of the various activities: inside them there are fundamental clues about their difficulty, so that you can understand which ones to face first.
Mount
Another piece of advice that we can give to all those who are about to venture into Paldea is to make the most of the mount. The Legendary Pokémon relating to your edition of the game (Koraidon on Scarlatto and Miraidon on Violetto) cannot be used in battles during the first hours of the adventure, but can be ridden almost immediately to speed up movement. The best way to use the mount is to call it before a jump: unless you want to jump from excessive heights, you can jump on the big Pokémon and then land without suffering any damage. This trick will allow you to shorten some routes or reach otherwise inaccessible places.
Challenge the coaches
If you are a longtime player of the Game Freak Pokémon episodes, you will be used to the old system of fighting with others coaches, which ‘blocked’ the player as soon as they met his gaze. In Scarlet and Violet this feature has been removed and it is up to the player to decide whether or not to face the coaches encountered during his journey. However, we suggest that you do not ignore these challengers and interact with them to start the fight, since they are a non-negligible source of Pokédollars e you experience Useful for upgrading your team members.
