A month after buying Twitter, Elon Musk continues to spread out his projects for the social network. The billionaire recently mentioned the fact of changing what makes one of the particularities of the platform, by considering drastically increasing the length of the messages that it will be possible to post there.
At its beginnings, Twitter only allowed to post very short messages whose length did not exceed 140 characters. A very specific characteristic, which required a good hierarchy of thought to write a clear, clean and precise tweet. Then, in 2017 the limit was increased to 280 characterswhich inevitably changed the situation.
During the transition to 280 characters, it was also observed that Twitter had become “more polite” since people had room to add polite phrases to their messages. An observation that has something to amuse todaysince it’s not really what we remember from the social network these days.
280 characters on Twitter? Not enough for Elon Musk
It not remain that 280 characters, it remains short to concretely develop a thought. If some users of the social network use the principle of the thread to express themselves at greater length, or that others use services of the Twitlonger type to write longer messages which circumvent this limitation, the current observation is that Twitter remains limited to short messages.
Since billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter, many users of the platform have expressed themselves on the subject, arguing that it would be well seen if Twitter experienced a new evolution on this point. Among them, a certain John Kraus, who believes that the social network could allow its users to write messages of up to 1000 characters, while displaying only the first 280 in a visible manner. An idea submitted to Elon Musk who simply replied “It’s on the list of things to do”.
Extending the tweets, a good idea?
It should nevertheless be emphasized that in recent weeks, Elon Musk has announced a lot of changes for Twitter without the social network changing more than that in the immediate future. A situation which is undoubtedly due to the fact that between layoffs and resignations, the platform has lost thousands of employees over the past month.
There is no doubt that changes are in the works for Twitter. But should extending the length of tweets be a priority for the platform? Nothing is less certain: faced with the chaos of recent weeks, the social network must already restore trust concerning verified accounts and badges for paying subscribers, which should start very soon with the arrival of three distinct badges. Enough to bring some money into the coffers at the same time and that, Twitter also needs it.
Otherwise, the length of future tweets is not yet defined. 420 characters, 1000 characters or something in between, Elon Musk responded to different users who mentioned very different numbers. One thing is certain: Twitter will indeed eventually change, and it is difficult to determine at this stage whether it will be for better or for worse.
