Today, all Budivelnik fans will have a very nervous day. The Kyiv club completes the group round of the FIBA Europe Cup with a home game against the outsider of the quartet “Groningen” from the Netherlands and has every chance to get into the Top-16 stage of the fourth most important European tournament. However, a lot for the Ukrainian team will depend on one more match of the final game day, in which the Estonian “Kalev/Kramo” will take on the Italian “Brindisi”.
Before the last round in group F there was a very dashing tournament spin. Ukrainian “Budivelnik”, Estonian “Kalev/Kramo” and Italian “Brindisi” claim to leave the quartet. At the same time, a triple spin at the finish of the group stage is very possible. Here, everything will be decided by the difference in points in personal meetings, and at the moment it is as follows: Kalev has +16, Budivelnik has -4, and Brindisi has -12. The Ukrainian team will not change its difference, but the Italians and Estonians have yet to face today.
Chances are different for everyone and for each of the clubs, certain conditions must match. In the context of the state of affairs of Valery Plekhanov’s wards, the alignment is as follows – the people of Kiev must definitely defeat Groningen and expect that in another match of our four there will be either a victory for Kalev or a victory for the Italians with an advantage of up to eight points inclusive or with a difference from +21. With the triumph of “Brindisi” in the interval from nine to twenty points, it will be Budivelnik that will be the third extra. Capital basketball players may lose, but then it is necessary that the Italians also fail. Then “Budivelnik” will overtake “Brindisi” in personal meetings and take the final second place.
The “builders” see their part of the task as not the most difficult. “Groningen” from the Netherlands is a frank outsider of our group and has long lost all chances to continue the fight. In Italy, basketball players from the Benelux will only fight for their own prestige. Groningen lost all five of their matches without options (which is only worth a home defeat from Kalev – 41:94), and in terms of abandoned points, the team has the worst record in the FIBA Europe Cup. He averages a measly 57.8 points per game.
The first match between Groningen and Budivelnik took place in the Netherlands on October 26, and it ended with a confident victory for the Kiev team – 61:74. Canadian Johnny Berhanemeskel became the top scorer in our club with 27 points.
Today’s fight belongs to the “must win” category for Budivelnik. However, all eyes of fans of the capital’s club will also be turned to Tallinn. It is worth noting that the match in Estonia will start one hour earlier than the game in Italy, and around the big break, the “builders” will already know the further layouts. The end of the group stage for Valery Plekhanov’s wards may be very different, but we will expect good news from the Baltics and wish the people of Kiev not to blunder in the game with an outright outsider.
