In a recent interview, voice actor Troy Baker said he can understand the controversial ending to The Last of Us Part 1 now that he’s a father too. Baker played the main character Joel in the game.
Originally released in 2013, The Last of Us tells the dramatic story of Joel and Ellie as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Above all, many players should remember the end of the adventure, which is still the subject of controversy.
In an interview, the voice actor for the main character Joel, Troy Baker, spoke about the controversial decision at the end of the game. Baker says the actor can now understand why Joel acted the way he did.
At this point we warn against spoilers for “The Last of Us Part 1” as well as for the upcoming series about the game.
Own son now lets the voice actor understand the decision
In a recent interview with IGN, voice actor Troy Baker was asked if he made the same decision as Joel made at the end of the game. “When we did the first part, I was across from Neil [Druckmann, Co-Präsident von Naughty Dog] at a disadvantage because Neil was a father. I was an actor. It was a very real possibility for him – what would it be like if I lost my daughter.”
Baker is referring to Joel’s decision to save Ellie at the end of the game. Fireflies scientists wanted to perform an operation on Ellie that could potentially lead to a cure for the Cordyceps infection. However, the young girl would not have survived this operation. Joel decides not to have the operation carried out and kills numerous scientists in his escape.
More updates on The Last of Us:
Since the release of The Last of Us, Troy Baker has become a father himself. “I have a son and I don’t know what I would do if I lost him,” Baker said. “But I know I would do anything if I had the chance to save him. I would do anything to save him. People have asked me why Joel did it if he could have saved the world and my answer is always he did it, he saved the world. It’s just that the world was that girl, that’s all.”
