While the SMS is preparing to celebrate its 30th anniversary in a few days, many people have found a way to divert its use. And that inspires some messaging platforms, WhatsApp in the lead.
30 years after the sending of the first SMS in history, we cannot deny that this format has been outdated by the democratization of instant messaging. Some services, like WhatsApp, have undertaken to modernize it: after all, this platform, which belongs to Meta, requires having a mobile phone number to work. This still brings its operation much closer to traditional SMS in the minds of many users.although many features deviate from it.
Has the SMS completely fallen into disuse? Not for everybody. Some users even have diverted the initial use, to send messages… to themselves! SMS is thus seen as a reminder system, which makes it easy to take notes accessible from a smartphone, without having to use a specific application.
WhatsApp surfs on the mode of the message that we send to ourselves
Faced with this trend, many messaging apps now offer a feature that allows you to send messages to yourself. Whether it’s apps that use SMS or other, the important thing is above all to offer a clear interface adapted to the situation.
WhatsApp is the latest application to get started. The Meta service, currently at the heart of a controversy linked to a major personal data leak, is undeterred and continues to deploy new features to meet as many needs as possible.
This new function therefore allows a user to easily send messages. Concretely, when you use WhatsApp, your name appears in your contact list : the application tells you that it is you (surprise) and therefore allows you to communicate with yourself in a dedicated channel. Named “Message Yourself”, this novelty was tested by WhatsApp for several weeks, and it was well received by the community. Its deployment is underway worldwide.
Similar functions in other applications
WhatsApp surfs on a fashionbut the fact is that Meta’s platform is a little behind on the subject. Signal, one of its main competitors, has had a similar feature called “Note to Self” for quite a while now. The community platform Slack has a space called “Jot Something Down” to send private notes to each other. We find a similar proposal on the side of Microsoft Teams. As for Telegram, it offers the user to save important messages via the “Saved Messages” option, which is a little different, but still useful considering the amount of messages that can circulate on this platform. Finally, we can also estimate that Discord also offers it, since it is possible to create a group discussion by not adding anyone: a good way to send messages quietly.
In short, all means are good for taking notes from messaging apps, and it’s a good thing that services realize that sometimes the most useful approach in certain situations turns out to be to talk to yourself!
