There have been some interesting changes in the global billionaire rankings over the past decade. A lot of new faces appeared at the top of the table, and those who occupied the highest rungs accumulated “a little more” fortune over the years.
Using Forbes’ annual data on billionaires, Visual Capitalist analyzed how the fortunes of the world’s 10 richest people have changed over the past decade.
Here is the current list of the richest people in 2022, showing the year they first made the ranking:
Microsoft co-founder and now philanthropist Bill Gates has been in first or second place in the table since 2014, but has now moved up to 4th place. The billionaire promised to give almost all of his fortune to charity.
From 2018 to 2021, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was ranked first in the ranking of the richest people in the world, but subsequently he was supplanted by Elon Musk. In 2020, Bezos became the first person to amass a $200 billion fortune after Amazon stock prices soared during the pandemic. Bezos’ net worth has taken a hit in recent months as Amazon’s share price has plunged again.
Bezos also pledged to give most of his funds to charity.

The rich get richer
Over time, the average net worth of the richest billionaires has grown significantly. Most of the wealth is held in the form of stocks and real estate.
In a decade, the average net worth of the top 10 richest people almost tripled, from $39 billion to $115 billion.
In fact, the first billionaire to cross the $100 billion threshold was Jeff Bezos in 2018, when he topped the list, dethroning Bill Gates. However, now almost everyone (except Steve Ballmer and Mukesh Ambani) in the top ten richest people in the world has crossed the $100 billion mark.
