The upcoming, highly anticipated Final Fantasy XVI has just been vetted by Brazil’s video game ratings body. The opportunity to learn more about its nature, which will not be intended for all ages.

Of all Square Enix’s catalog (or rather what’s left, the publisher having sold franchises like Tomb Raider or Deus Ex to Embracer Group), Final Fantasy remains probably the most famous and adored brand. In 2023, it will give birth to a brand new episode fiercely desired by millions of fans.

Some interesting details come to us from the Brazilian classification body, the equivalent of our European PEGI. Its goal ? Analyze the content of a game to display the main “sensitive” elements, so as to give an age requirement. In this case, here, Final Fantasy XVI has just been discouraged for people under 16 in Brazil for a whole host of reasons.

Blood, kills and many more

The classification platform decrypts the content of Final Fantasy 16 as follows: the game will contain “partially hidden sex scenes” as well as “violent content toned down by the staging”. The rest of the description displays other sensitive content: there will be “gun violence, blood, intentional deaths, torture and suffering from the victims”.

Even more intriguing: the adventure will contain “drugs, prostitution, sexual content both shown and evoked”… and finally, “hate crimes”.

Obviously, describing the contents of a video game black on white and textually, without artifice, quickly reinforces its different aspects. In itself, defeating a simple NPC in an adventure game is tantamount to killing or using violence, but that does not mean that the title should be prohibited for minors.

For Final Fantasy XVI, we will therefore wait to see what our PEGI will say to us. In any case, the game will be released on PlayStation 5 in 2023: a release date could be announced during the Game Awards 2022, in a few days.
