What is Marvel’s Midnight Suns?
Announced at Gamescom 2021, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical role-playing game set in the Marvel universe. If it is particularly expected, it is because it is developed by masters of the genre: Firaxis, particularly known for the XCom saga. The game is therefore betting on bringing together one of the most popular licenses and one of the least accessible game genres for neophytes.
What is the story behind Marvel’s Midnight Suns?
It all starts with the Darkold, a book of dark magic you may have seen in some Marvel works. Hydra’s Doctor Faustus seeks to use it to resurrect Lillith and steal her power. Yes but now, once back to life, she frees herself and makes Hydra her weapon. She then becomes a terrible threat again. Doctor Strange has no choice! Accompanied by Iron Man, he sets out to find the Midnight Suns and resurrect the Hunter, son of Lillith. Together they will try to defeat all the villains and corrupted minions and put Lillith out of harm’s way again.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns borrows its turn-based tactical combat system from XCOM, but it also stands out enormously by offering deck building mechanics. In fact, before each fight, you will have to compose a team with three superheroes. They all own a range of abilities from which you will draw randomly at the start of each turn. This forces you to adopt a short-term strategy, since you cannot predict from reliable sources the abilities you will draw over the turns.
Also note that the movements are not limited and that it is not possible to miss these shots. All these mechanics allow Marvel’s Midgnight Suns to be a much more accessible tactical game than the XComs. The idea is obviously to be able to address the many fans of the Marvel universe, even if they are not very familiar with the tactical genre.
What is the Abbey?
The Abbey is the equivalent of a HQ for the Midnight Suns. Between each fight, you can walk around in the shoes of the Hunter. Various activities are offered there. You can just train with an ally in the garden, open chests with Tony Stark at the Forge, ask Doctor Strange to build new buildings or interact with other superheroes to strengthen your bonds. The idea is therefore to prepare yourself before the fights in order to leave stronger on the battlefield.
Who are the Midnight Sons?
In the comics, the Midnight Sons are a group of superheroes with an occult connection. Among them, we find in particular Doctor Strange, Blade or Ghost Rider. With others, they form a rather strange team which will meet for the first time in Rise of the Midnight Sons in 1992, in order to face the dangerous Lillith precisely.
But if there is a slight difference between Midnight Sons and Midnight Suns, it’s not for nothing. If the game of Firaxis takes up the antagonist of Lillith, it is not limited to only Midnight Sons. This small difference therefore allows him to open up to a large roster of playable characters.
Which superheroes will be playable?
As we said above, the cast of Marvel’s Midnight Suns is not limited to the Midnight Sons. If we will find Doctor Strange, Blade and Ghost Rider in this tactical game, they will not be the only members of a group of superheroes to participate in the battle. Whether it’s the Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel…), the X-Men (Wolverine, Magik…) or the other heroes of the Marvel universe (Wanda, Nico Minoru…), they will be there. In all, count about ten confirmed characters so far. And note that the roster should expand later with DLCs. And we already know the names of the characters to come: Venom, Deadpool, Morbius and Tornado.
Note that the Hunter, the famous son of Lillith, is an original character. In a way, it is your own superhero since you can customize it to your liking.
Will there be microtransactions in Marvel’s Midnight Suns?
Who says cards, says fear of lootboxes. Firaxis wanted to reassure players at this level. As revealed by the studio, “there will be no lootboxes in Marvel’s Midnight Suns or related microtransactions allowing for more cards.” Only skins that do not affect the level of your heroes will be offered for purchase in game through Eclipse Credits.
Game for children or for adults?
If Marvel’s Midnight Suns wants to be more accessible, it cannot be called a children’s game. Indeed, tactical requires, it is better to have a good head to try it. Add to that content qualified as “mature” with adult themes (sexualization, drugs, etc.), violence and foul language and you understand why. Marvel’s Midnight Suns picked up a PEGI 16 from us.
What is the release date of Marvel’s Midnight Suns?
Originally scheduled for March 2022, Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been postponed to the second half of 2022. It was during D23 (Disney event) that we had more details on the date, a date that has not changed. from. Marvel’s Midnight Suns will be available from December 2 on PS5, Xbox Series and PC. PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions are in the works, but no release date has been announced for these.

Will there be post-launch content?
As you can see above, Marvel’s Midnight Suns propose un Season Pass. The latter includes 23 premium skins as well as access to the four DLC packs that will arrive after the game’s release. As we said above, these will allow you to accommodate Venom, Morbius, Deadpool and Tornado, but also to add new missions, new enemies and additional skins.
