Brief introduction
Czech-Slovak co-production, with text and staging by Slovak Lukáš Brutovský, mixed artistic team and cast, spoken in both languages, Iokasté focuses on this figure from Greek mythology. By giving her the centrality and voice she never had, the show tells the story of a queen always relegated to “the margins by men, theatrical characters and authors.” Even in Oedipus Rex, Sophocles only gives Jocasta a biased role when her suicide is described by a messenger. Iokasté opposes a feminist vision, a confrontation between antiquity and the present, myth and #MeToo. Taking advantage of the similarity and difference of the Czech and Slovak languages, combining the poetry of a contemporary text with a strong visual and movement component, Iokasté investigates the roots of misogyny, antifeminism and toxic masculinity, from Sophocles to Donald Trump.
