Germany head coach Hans Dieter Flick commented on the events at the 2022 World Cup. In the 3rd round, the Germans beat Costa Rica (4:2), but took third place in Group E and were eliminated from the tournament.
“The disappointment is huge. I don’t blame Spain. I never look at other teams. We have only ourselves to blame for this, we had enough chances, especially against Japan, and also against Spain at the end of the match.
We need to develop players better. We have been in need of number 9 and strong defenders for many years. Defense has distinguished German football for many years. We need to get back to basics.
Jamal Musiala was fantastic. I am very sorry for such a player that he will no longer play in this World Cup.
Will I retire? We will quickly resolve this, it is difficult to answer now, right after the game, when we were eliminated. We’ll see soon.”
