In light of recent reports regarding the cancellation of the Smash World Tour Championship for 2022, as well as all events in 2023, Nintendo has released an explanatory statement. The Smash World Tournament is the world-renowned competitive program for the successful Super Smash Bros. franchise. from Nintendo. The tournament started in 2020 and has since become a platform for the best players in the world to showcase their skills.
A couple of days ago, the tournament organizers reported that Nintendo was forcing them to cancel the 2022 World Championship, as well as all upcoming events. The company was stunned by this news and forced to intervene; she reached out to partners, competitors and fans, but without warning and without time to prepare, this may not be enough. This is a big loss for the Smash World Tour and for the competitive Smash community as a whole.
Now, Nintendo has released a statement that all of its partners are required not only to comply with fan health and safety guidelines, but also to strictly follow the company’s brand and intellectual property guidelines. If Nintendo catches someone violating these rules, it has the right to make adjustments to their work. Nintendo also clarified that it did not ask SWT to cancel the 2022 World Championship, the decision was made by the organization itself.
