What is the release date of Super Mario Bros. the film ?
The animated movie Super Mario Bros. will come out between the end of March and the end of April 2023 depending on the territory, and this exclusively in the cinema, what all the trailers claim. It will therefore be necessary to wait for many months before being able to watch it on DVD/blu-ray or SVOD. The very first theatrical release will be in Belgium on March 23, 2023, and you will have to wait March 29, 2023 in French cinemas. However, Europe is very privileged here, since the United States will have to wait for the 7 avril 2023 to attend the first screenings. As for the Japanese spectators, they will be quite exceptionally served last, with a scheduled release on 27 avril 2023 on the side of the archipelago.
As this is a cinema exclusive, and not available on SVOD platforms at launch, you will need to head to theaters from 29 mars 2023 to see Super Mario Bros. the film in France. In particular, you can find on AlloCiné the list of cinemas located in metropolitan France showing the film, as well as the times of the various screenings.
Given the chronology of the media in France, we should not expect to find it on SVOD before about 15 to 18 months, or not before the end of 2024. Following the commercial and (even more) critical failure of the adaptation of Super Mario Bros. in the cinema in 1993, Nintendo has become much more strict about the exploitation of its licenses on the big screen. It was with the arrival of the first games of the Super Mario license on the various virtual consoles that Shigeru Miyamoto, character creator and executive producer of the games in the series, imagined the idea of a new film.
The Sony Pictures Entertainment hack in 2014 revealed email exchanges revealing that the firm had tried to acquire the rights to the Super Mario license for a film adaptation, without success. It is on the side of Universal that Nintendo has actually turned, initially with a view to its collaboration with the Parks & Resorts division to create attractions based on the world of the plumber. It is in this context that the link will be made with the animation studio Illumination, with whom discussions began in 2016 before being made official at the end of 2017, with production starting in 2020.
Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario and historical producer of the series, is very involved in this adaptation.
What is the storyline of Super Mario Bros. the film ?
Although her pitch (no, not the princess) has yet to be officially revealed, the two Super Mario Bros. the film allow us quite easily to get an idea of its scriptwriting bases. It would indeed seem that Mario and Luigi, plumbers in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, find themselves mysteriously teleported to another dimension, that of the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is threatened by Bowser, le roi des Koopas, leading an army of turtles and other creatures at his command.
If we are to believe the different sequences of the two trailers, we can deduce that Luigi is captured by Bowser and that Mario is introduced to Princess Peach, ruler of the endangered kingdom, by the Toad, his loyal servants. Together, Mario and Peach then embark on an adventure with Toad, both to save the kingdom from the Koopa army, but also to save Luigi and reunite the two brothers. Finally, many characters from the extended universe created by Mr. Miyamoto will be present, such as Donkey Kong ou Yoshi, to recite nobody else but them.
Who are the voice actors in Super Mario Bros. the film ?
The cast of the animated film Super Mario Bros. features, in its original version, the voices of Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, Jurassic World) for Mario, from Jack Black (Rock Academy, Jumanji) as Bowser, or as Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Glass, Peaky Blinders) who will play Princess Peach. Finally, even if he will not dub the character to which he is attached, Mario’s voice is a priori part of the cast of dubbers: Charles Martinet will play a character that has not yet been officially revealed.

However, it is the French cast that interests us the most in France, and for good reason: the VF seems to be of immense quality, to the point of being envied by many English speakers who are particularly unenthusiastic about Chris Pratt’s dubbing. Although nothing has been officially confirmed by the production, the presence of the French trailer in the Nintendo Direct broadcast by Nintendo France leaves almost no doubt about it. Thus, it seems certain that Mario will be doubled by Pierre Tessier (French voice of Ryan Reynolds, notably in Detective Pikachu), and Peach by Audrey Deaf (Voice of Kassandra in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Abby in The Last of Us Part II). Donald Reignoux, who needs no introduction, embodies Kamek, the magician turtle, one of Bowser’s main allies.
The King of the Koopas is also the only major role whose voice changed between the first and second trailers, going from Christophe Lemoine to Jérémie Covillault. His immense career as a dubber, however, amply justifies it: he was notably the voice of Andy Serkis dans The Batman (Alfred), or the main roles played by Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road, or Hugh Jackman in Logan. He has also dubbed many video game characters, including Daruk in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Jonah in the Tomb Raider “reboot trilogy”, and Captain Price in the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. . Who are the creatives behind Super Mario Bros. the film ?
Super Mario Bros. the film is an American-Japanese creation. However, if Shigeru Miyamoto is involved in the project as a co-producer, and Shuntaro Furukawa, current president of Nintendo, is executive producer of the film, all of the headliners around the project are American. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath et Michael Jelenic (the latter having worked on a lot of DC Comics animated films), and the screenplay is the work of Matthew Fogel.
Also, the producer of the film is Chris Meledandry, founder of the Illumination studio, mainly known for Despicable Me and Minions. It is the French division of the latter, Illumination Studios Paris, who is mainly in charge of the project. Finally, the soundtrack is composed by Brian Tyler, known both in the world of cinema (Fast and Furious, Expendables, Avengers: Age of Ultron…) and video games (Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Lost Ark…). The latter is assisted in his creative process by Kōji Kondō, legendary composer of the Super Mario saga since 1985.
