Elden Ring won the Grand Award at Playstation Partner Awards 2022 Japan Asia, held in Tokyo. This year’s award went to the two Asian-developed games that topped the sales charts around the world. In this case, the honor fell to the FromSoftware branded game and Genshin Impact.
In the case Elden Ring has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. For comparison, Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5 only sold 1.5 million copies.
During the event, the director of FromSoftware Hidetaka Miyazaki participated in a Q&A session with reporters where he was asked what are the reasons, in his opinion, that led Elden Ring to such success.
The Japanese developer’s response was honest and sincere: “I didn’t think much about it. It’s true that sales have outnumbered our previous games, but I can’t explain why. If I wanted to reproduce a similar success, I wouldn’t be able to,” she replied laughing. To then continue: “I haven’t thought about it much because I think it’s not a good idea as analyzing it deeply would then mean trying to consciously replicate it in another game”.
Miyazaki then went on to state that, of course, Elden Ring’s sales and critical acclaim made him happy. And this satisfied both him and the development team, pushing them to create more games always following their own style. In fact, the game director relaunched announcing that FromSoftware will make ever more interesting and ambitious games.
Elden Ring is among the leading nominees to win the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2022, which will take place this week. Do you think he will eventually win the prize?
