The Sonic Frontiers team revealed some background related to the game in an interview posted on the official Sonic The Hedgehog YouTube account. Interviewees were game director Morio Kishimoto, lead designer Jyunpei Ootsu, producer Sachiko Kawamura and lead programmer Hiroki Tokunaga. Among the most interesting curiosities we find a combat system that, originally, winked a lot at exponents such as Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
The interview was transcribed in English on ResetEra, allowing us to find out more about the combat system. The team didn’t go into much detail on the matter but we probably would have seen clashes in closed arenas where Sonic dabbled in rapid clashes chaining various combos, alternating physical attacks with ranged attacks.
However, the team decided to reject this combat system, opting for something more classic and close to the spirit of the series. However, some elements have remained, even if they relate to the abilities of the hedgehog. Sonic can in fact unlock different melee attacks ranging from dodging to rolling, through kicks and punches. To these are added ranged attacks such as the Sonic Boom e il Phantom Rush. All iconic attacks of the character but which, perhaps, had been adapted precisely in a context more similar to Devil May Cry.
Finally, the team revealed that in their plans the boss fight with Giganto was better. The boss occupied almost the entire development phase of the project. Unfortunately some ideas were removed because, according to the team, it would have ruined the pacing of the game.
