At the end of Shadowlands, it wasn’t entirely clear whether Ysera would return to Azeroth as an Aspect in Dragonflight, or would have to stay in the Ardenweald in the Shadowlands forever. When asked, Blizzard developers initially stated that Ysera’s daughter, Merithra, will lead the Green Dragonflight in Dragonflight, but this doesn’t jibe with the latest Dragonflight artwork, which features the five Dragon Aspects in their human or elf forms. In the picture we see Ysera in her new night elf form, while Merithra keeps her old simple model from WoW (buy now): Legion for the time being.

We’ve known since the WoW beta: Dragonflight that Ysera will definitely return to Azeroth. Finally, in the green plains of Ohn’ahra, we learn how the story of Ysera continues. Broadly speaking, it’s about the magical seedling that the Winter Queen gave to Tyrande and the night elves at the end of Shadowlands. Tyrande, Shandris and Ysera finally discussed in the Ardenweald where the sapling could be kept safe. They agree that the young tree must be taken to Merithra.

The safest place to hide Tyrande’s seedling is in the Emerald Dream. Merithra even knows a part of the dream that has not yet been touched and corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare. However, in the course of the quest line, this sanctuary is attacked by the primalists and the entrance to Azeroth is destroyed. Merithra has advice, she explains that we can reach the Emerald Dream from the other side, i.e. through the Shadowlands. Merithra hopes that her mother, Ysera, can open the portal to the Green Sanctum for our heroes and drive out the primalists.
All this is not an easy task. The young dragon lady reminds us once again in Ohn’ahra Forest that Ysera’s soul is bound to the Winter Queen and the Ardenweald. That means she can’t just leave the Shadowlands. It would take a great sacrifice, Ysera explained, to restore the balance between life and death before the Winter Queen would allow her to return to Azeroth.
But who has to make the great sacrifice? In Dragonflight, we learn that Xavius originally targeted Malfurion in Val’sharah, not Ysera. The green dragon lady sacrificed her own life to save the archdruid. In order to free Ysera from the Shadowlands, Malfurion Stormrage must remain in Ardenweald in her place. In this in-game cinematic, Malfurion tells Tyrande how to restore the natural balance. The couple says goodbye in the Ardenwald.

So Malfurion remains in the Shadowlands while Ysera returns to Azeroth with Tyrande. The fate of the seedling and the night elves is now in the hands of Ysera, Merithra, and the moon priestess. In the following cinematic we experience the happy reunion between Ysera and her daughter Merithra.

Mother and daughter are reunited, but the seedling is far from safe in the Emerald Dream. The primalists are trying to steal the seedling to use its magic for their sinister purposes. The green dragonflight pledged to tend the magical tree until the night elves decide where to plant it. It is clear then that the Greens will protect the future Kaldorei World Tree, no matter what the cost. Merithra knows of a titan artifact that could hide the sapling from the eyes of all enemies. However, only the dreamer can activate the artefact’s magic. Previously, this honor was bestowed only upon the Green Dragonflight Aspect.

The big surprise is that Ysera rejects this title, declaring that she is no longer associated with the Emerald Dream, at least not as an aspect. Merithra must step forward and embrace her new role as leader of the green dragonflight.
As a new dreamer, Merithra is finally able to drive the primalists out of the Emerald Dream. The magical tree has been saved and the Green Dragonflight officially has a new leader. If and when Ysera will return to the Ardenwald remains a secret for the time being. Finally, Merithra and her mother take off together to celebrate Ysera’s return.
We have summarized all the important lore events from the quest line in Ohn’ahra for you:
The Primalists have set their sights on the Emerald Dream and are attempting to destroy the artifact (The Heart of the Dream) and the night elves’ new world tree.Tyrande and Merithra planted the seed from the Ardenweald into the earth in the Emerald Dream. There the sapling should be tended and protected. There is another portal to the dream in the Shadowlands, but it can only be opened by Ysera. Malfurion takes Ysera’s place in the Ardenweald. However, Ysera says her stay in Azeroth will not last long. She may one day return to the realm of the Winter Queen. Whether Malfurion will have to stay in Ardenweald forever is unclear. Perhaps he and Ysera will swap places again in the near future.Ysera will no longer lead the Green Dragonflight – her daughter Merithra will take her place and be given the title “The Dreamer”.
