The reason could be not very humane treatment of animals.
According to Reuters, US regulators have launched an investigation into the startup Neuralink, which, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is hastily trying to develop brain implants, allegedly neglecting the principles of humane testing on animals. Since 2018, about 1,500 animals have died as a result of Neuralink’s experiments, including about 280 sheep, pigs and monkeys, according to the source. Rats and mice have also traditionally been used to test the company’s developments.

According to former employees of the company, whose testimony is attached to the investigation materials, excessive haste in conducting research leads to errors that cause additional deaths among animals. Specialists work in conditions of emergency and high emotional stress, as a result, surgical errors are made, either necessitating repeated experiments on other individuals, or causing unnecessary suffering and complications in experimental animals. At least several dozen animals were killed in vain as a result, according to witnesses. At the same time, Elon Musk himself regularly pushes researchers and threatens to completely close the startup in the absence of visible progress. He recently expressed hope that the first human trials of the Neuralink brain implant would take place within the next six months.
