In 8 days precisely, Avatar 2: The Way of the Water will be available at the cinema. A long-awaited release, 13 years after a first which remains the greatest success in the history of cinema. Still, the franchise’s future past Avatar 3 still seems uncertain.
Avatar 2, a success is emerging, but the director is worried
James Cameron, the cast and crew have been touring the world’s media for weeks promoting Avatar: The Waterway, which will hit theaters at from Wednesday 14 December. By reading or listening to the various reactions and interviews, one constant emerges: serenity is not on the side of James Cameron. Between the budget, which would go from 350 to 400 million dollarsthe time elapsed between the two films, and the state of the film market, the director asks a lot of questions.
The market could tell us we’re done in three months, or we could be half done, which would mean, “OK, let’s finish the story in the third movie, and don’t go on forever,” if that’s not the case. just isn’t profitable. (…) They are horribly expensive films.
It was a rather risky project economically to make a film that was so expensive before the pandemic. At this point we just have to launch it and see what happens. (…) The key to a sequel is to be surprising in a way that won’t put off the audience. To reconnect with what is familiar to him, what had amused him and made it a good film, and which made the first opus a success. (…)
Yet with massive bookings, the 148 million views on the first trailer in 24 hours, and the projections that announce 150 million dollars in revenue during the first weekend, there is however reason to hope. Until then, James Cameron thinks that it may be necessary to consider concluding the story with the 3rd film.
Avatar 6 and Avatar 7 mentioned, but the road is long
However, the story is planned for hold on 5 films, and it may not be over. Because, reversal of situation, James Cameron now evokes Avatar 6 and Avatar 7 from The Hollywood Reporter! However, if he already has ideas because he has “5 or 6 more films in him”, he indicates that he is unlikely to realize them:
I would then be 89 years old (at this rate, editor’s note). Obviously, I won’t be able to make Avatar films indefinitely, given the amount of energy required. I should train someone to do that because I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do that.
Obviously, he the public will have to respond for the production and James Cameron to finish the current project, train someone who, in turn, will continue the Avatar adventure. We are not there yet. The first step towards a franchise that will last for decades will begin on November 14. If successful, the adventure will continue with a 4th film already in productionthen possibly a 5th, etc.
