Mills Lane passed away at the age of 85. To give the sad announcement there Boxing Hall of Fame del Nevada and sons Tommy and Terry with their mother Kay, who were at the bedside of the boxing referee who had gotten worse in the last week. The well-known former boxer and legendary boxing referee had been ill since 2022 due to a stroke which had left him paralyzed on one side of his body and unable to communicate verbally.
Lane was known to us above all for being the referee, a regular figure in every episode, of the irreverent “Celebrity Deathmatch”, the MTV show aired between 1998 and 2002where reconstructed with plasticine, the various celebrities from the entertainment world clashed in violent and incorrect battles to the death, always ending with the departure of at least one of the two contenders.
In truth Mills Lane was also a professional boxer as well as a legendary boxing referee, comparable to our Pierluigi Collina for the sport of football. One of the best known events, saw him referee the famous fight in which Mike Tyson tore off a piece of the ear of his rival Evander Holyfield.
A former Marine and law graduate, Lane also served as a district attorney in Reno, then a judge in the Washoe County Courthouse in the state of Nevada. The court of the Rhine, in fact, bears his name. He was also the star of a reality show, “Judge Mills Lane” which aired for four seasons until 2001.
A legendary figure of sport leaves us, who also knew how to embrace an ironic context with Celebrity Deathmatch, which certainly made hundreds of viewers of the show smile.
