Have Warner, DC and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson gotten off the proverbial black eye again? The Hollywood star and former wrestler’s superhero debut proved neither fish nor meat at the global box office. Although Black Adam was able to climb to the top of the cinema charts, he didn’t leave much of an impression there. After it was rumored several times in the past few days that the new DC blockbuster would develop into a financial disaster, insiders are now relativizing this representation. Black Adam could even be profitable for everyone involved.
Black Adam: Is the superhero film actually a mega flop?
On Tuesday, December 6th, we reported on the looming mega-flop looming for Warner, DC and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at the worldwide box office. As international media rumored, Black Adam would be about to make a loss of 50 to 100 million dollars.
The figures known so far support this representation. With a production budget of around $195 million and a marketing budget of $100 million, a blockbuster production like Black Adam would have to gross at least double that to at least break even. However, this more than 600 million dollars is offset by a box office result of just over 384 million dollars.
Black Adam: According to insiders, it wasn’t a flop at the box office
Insiders now vigorously contradict this representation. According to a report by Deadline, one should not overlook various factors in this calculation, such as income from merchandise items. Producer Joe Singer says reports of the possible loss of the Black Adam comic book adaptation are false. The actual marketing budget was significantly lower because the film was advertised on the main actor’s social media channels.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has over half a billion followers across TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Marketing power for which you didn’t have to pay any additional costs. You would also earn additional money with Black Adam with the release for the home theater market and broadcast on the in-house streaming service HBO max. According to Deadline, a profit of 52 to 72 million dollars is even possible due to all these factors.

The future will have to show to what extent one of these contradictory representations is correct. Most likely, as so often, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Allegedly, however, the preparations for Black Adam 2 are already in full swing. Apparently, Warner still has faith in Black Adam.
