Metacritic joined the flash mob with its traditional annual summaries — the popular rating aggregator ranked the best movies and series of 2022.
The Metacritic team formed its own ratings for films and TV series in 2022 based on lists and reviews of leading publications and specialized film sites, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Empire, IndieWire, The Observer, and others. At the same time, Metacritic applied its own methodology and distributed points as follows:
3 points for first place; 2 points for the second; 1 point for 3-10th place in the rating or entering the unranked list (no more than 10 titles); 0.5 points for entering the unranked list of 20 titles for movies/series and the unranked list of series with distribution by individual genres (no more than 10 titles).
Both lists are not final and will be updated during December and January after new rankings are published. As of December 8, Metacritic has processed 24 separate TV series ratings and 32 movie ratings from various publications/sites.
At the moment, the rating of films is headed by “Aftersun” – the feature-length debut of the Scottish director and screenwriter Charlotte Wells. This is a dramatic story about the relationship between a father and a daughter, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In second place is the musical drama “Tar” by Todd Field with Cate Blanchett in the lead role, and the horror film “Now” directed by Jordan Peele closes the top three. As for series, the first place is held by the famous series “Better Call Saul”, which ended in 2022 with the sixth season. Ben Stiller’s Adam Scott-starrer The Divide, a sci-fi psychological thriller made for Apple TV+, and Christopher Storer’s FX/Hulu comedy-drama The Bear are a few points behind.
